Pipe bursting in Federal Heights

When a Federal Heights sewer line has collapsed, gone flat or was never big enough, a liner has nothing to hold onto. Pipe bursting installs a replacement along the old alignment from two small pits, and the yard, driveway and pavement stay shut.

How bursting replaces a pipe without a trench

Pipe bursting pulls a new sewer line through the path of the old one and breaks the old one apart in the process. A hardened bursting head, a little larger than the existing pipe, is drawn through it by a cable or a rod string anchored in a pit at the far end. As it advances it shatters the old clay, iron, fiber or plastic pipe outward into the surrounding ground, and a single heat-fused run of HDPE attached behind it slides into the opened path. When the head reaches the receiving pit, the new pipe is in place from end to end. The lawn, the mature trees, the driveway, the front walk and the public street between the pits are never disturbed. For a Federal Heights lateral that runs under a sidewalk and into the road, that is what keeps the job to a day instead of a week of traffic control and pavement patching.

When the camera calls for bursting

Lining is the default for most Front Range laterals because it works entirely through the cleanout, but a liner can only be cured inside a pipe that has kept its form. Some lines have not. Orangeburg in a postwar subdivision has flattened into an oval or a slot. A run of clay has caved in after one heave too many. A belly has settled so deep that it holds inches of standing water and will keep collecting solids no matter how smooth the wall is. A four-inch pipe serves a house that became a duplex, or a small commercial building that became a restaurant. In each case the pipe is beyond restoring and must be replaced, and bursting is the way to replace it without a trench. the verified installer covering Federal Heights explains the decision from the footage on a Federal Heights job and does not propose bursting where a liner would do.

The sequence on site

The job begins with the inspection video, which has located the collapse or belly by distance and depth. Utility locates are called in, since the head displaces soil and must stay clear of gas, water and electric lines. The crew digs an entry pit by the main and an exit pit at the house end, or uses an existing manhole or the basement where one is available. The HDPE is fused into one length and staged, the head and cable are set, and the pull begins. The old pipe shatters outward and the new pipe follows. At the end the new line is connected at the house and at the main, the pits are backfilled and compacted, the surface is restored, and a camera records the finished pipe in grade. A residential pull is normally finished in one day, and it proceeds in winter, since the pits are compact enough to dig through frozen ground and the pull itself runs well beneath it.

What the new pipe gives you

Fused HDPE is as close to a permanent sewer line as the trade has. There are no joints along its length for roots to find, it does not rust or scale, and it is rated for a century of service. It is also flexible, and that is the quality that matters most under Adams County: when the expansive clay swells in a wet spring and shrinks in a dry fall, HDPE moves with the ground instead of cracking at a joint the way clay and cast iron did. A liner rehabilitates what is there; bursting takes the old pipe out of the equation. The two methods are compared without a sales angle at the CIPP reference.

Pits, permits and the right-of-way

A bursting job needs a plumbing permit from the city or county, and a right-of-way permit for the pit near the main when it sits in the sidewalk or street. Some sanitation districts send an inspector to watch the tie-in before the pit by the main is backfilled, and several Front Range jurisdictions have point-of-sale lateral rules that a documented replacement satisfies; the contractor confirms what Federal Heights requires. Utility locating, traffic control for the street pit and restoration of the two openings are the contractor's responsibility, not the owner's. On a foothill lot with shallow bedrock, the pits are the only excavation, which is the whole appeal.

Questions worth asking

Ask what in the footage rules out a liner. Ask what pipe is going in, how the joints are fused, and how long the warranty runs. Ask who obtains the permits, who handles the locates and how the pits are restored. Installers who answer those questions with documentation are listed at the verified installer directory.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting

When is bursting chosen over lining?+

When the host pipe cannot support a liner: a collapsed section, Orangeburg that has flattened, a deep belly holding standing water, a line crushed by root or soil pressure, or a line undersized for what drains into it. Lining is preferred when the pipe is still round, because it needs no pits; the camera makes the call.

How large are the pits?+

A few feet square, one near the house or cleanout and one near the main, and smaller when an existing manhole, cleanout riser or the basement can serve as one end. Everything between the pits stays undisturbed. The pits are backfilled, compacted and the surface restored at the end of the day.

What pipe is installed?+

HDPE, heat-fused into one unbroken run before the pull, so the finished line has no joints at all. It will not rust, offers roots no entry, and it flexes with soil movement rather than cracking, which suits the expansive clay under Adams County.

Can the line be upsized during the pull?+

Yes. The head is chosen to break the old pipe and widen the bore enough for a larger pipe, so a four-inch lateral can become six-inch in the same operation. That is common when a house has been converted to a duplex or a commercial building has changed use.

How do I get a quote?+

Phone or use the form. The camera finds the collapse or sag, the footage and a written finding reach you, and the proposal says bursting and shows why. Estimates are free; call now.
